Violin
born in Vienna in 1947, studied violin with Franz Samohyl and Max Rostal, with inspiration from Sandor Vegh and Ivry Gitlis, becoming a member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Soloists while in his teens, and serving as first violinist of the Austrian String Quartet and the Webern String Trio for 30 years. Since 1969 he has been professor of violin at the Mozarteum, where he also served as acting rector, and as artistic director of its International Summer Academy. A visiting professor at the Menuhin Academy, Gstaad, the National Australian Conservatory, Melbourne, and the China Conservatory, Beijing, he has given masterclasses in conservatories and universities throughout Europe, in Japan and in the U.S.A. As president of the Austrian National Youth Competition “Musik der Jugent,” his mission is to nurture the next Austrian musical generation. He serves on the juries of the Mozart competitions in Salzburg and Augsburg, the Fritz Kreisler, Vienna, the Louis Spohr, Weimar, and Georg Kulenkampff, Cologne. He performs regularly with cellists Julius Berger and Andre Emelianoff. He is a Keshet Eilon faculty member.
